Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn in as Iran's president on Wednesday, nearly eight weeks after a disputed election that unleashed the worst unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution and divided the political and clerical elite.
The 53-year-old hard-liner took his oath of office before parliament, with riot police out in force in nearby streets to foil any protests by opponents who say the election was rigged.
Former presidents like Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who support Ahmadinejad's main political rival Mirhossein Mousavi, boycotted the inauguration. They shared their opinions about the political and economic.

The official IRNA news agency said most of parliament's 70 reformist legislators also stayed away.
He now has two weeks to present a cabinet to parliament for approval, but may get a rough ride from the conservatives who dominate the assembly, as well as from his moderate foes.
Mousavi and reformist cleric Mehdi Karoubi say the next government will be illegitimate -- defying Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has formally endorsed Ahmadinejad.
Will Ahmadinejad bring brighter future to Iran?

US Wants Iran Answer on Nuclear Talks by September
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Obama administration hopes Iran will respond to an offer for talks on its nuclear program soon.
Gates spoke in Israel, where he is discussing Iran's nuclear ambitions with top officials. He said Washington hopes Iran will answer the diplomatic overture in time for the opening of the U.N. General Assembly in September.
While in Israel, Gates is meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak. U.S. envoy George Mitchell held talks with Barak on Sunday and meets Mr. Netanyahu on Tuesday.
Gates and Mitchell are on separate trips in the Middle East as part of a U.S. push for peace in the region.
After talks in Syria Sunday, Mitchell said U.S. President Barack Obama is determined to facilitate a comprehensive peace between Israel and all its Arab neighbors.
The American diplomat said resuming peace negotiations between Syria and Israel is a "near-term goal."

Syria suspended peace talks with Israel after Israel launched a military offensive against the Palestinian militant group Hamas last December.
The U.S. special envoy to the Middle East is now in Egypt to discuss the stalled Middle East peace process with President Hosni Mubarak. He will then travel to the West Bank for talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Mitchell's agenda includes pressing Israel to halt Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank and disputed East Jerusalem.
Israel has rejected U.S. demands for a total freeze on settlement construction, souring relations with Washington. But Prime Minister Netanyahu has downplayed the disagreement.

US military says 4 soldiers were killed in Baghdad

Bad news for the US military.
BAGHDAD -- Four U.S. soldiers were killed in the combat on the eve of the withdrawal of American troops from Baghdad and other Iraq cities, the U.S. military said, as Iraqi forces on Tuesday assumed control for security in urban areas.
The U.S. military said the four soldiers served with the Multi-National Division-Baghdad but did not provide further details pending notification of their families. It said they died as a "result of combat related injuries."
The withdrawal that was completed on Monday is part of a U.S.-Iraqi security pact and marks the first major step toward withdrawing all American forces from the country by Dec. 31, 2011. President Obama has said all combat troops will be gone by the end of August 2010.
The Iraqi government has named June 30 "National Sovereignty Day" and declared a public holiday.
President Jalal Talabani said the day could not have happened without the help of the United States, which invaded Iraq in 2003 and ousted Saddam Hussein - who was later convicted by an Iraqi court and executed in Dec. 2006.

Everyone miss Michael, and I miss him very much. He was far from a saint. But there was a gentility and nobility of spirit that I found humbling and inspiring in a man so accomplished. My heart bleeds for his children whom he adored and who adored him in turn. I think of Prince and Paris and how attached they were to a father who regularly told me that he knew that when they grew up they would be asked by biographers what kind of father he had been. He wanted them to have only warm memories to share. Alas, the memories will remain incomplete.

President Obama Battles the Political Gauntlet of Health Care today

The Obama administration is discovering what the Clinton administration learned 16 years ago: the politics of health care reform are treacherous.
Just several months ago, President Obama appeared uniquely positioned to get Congress to pass comprehensive health care reform, something that has eluded every Democratic president since Harry Truman.
On March 5th, the president Obama convened a health care "summit" at the White House which brought together Democrats, Republicans, unions, businesses and health industry leaders as well. One by one, the key players -- many of whom had opposed reform efforts in the past -- assembled in the East Room of the White House, vowing to work together.
The optimistic note was echoed by top business and health industry leaders, including Karen Ignagni, president of America's Health Insurance Plans (as HIP), who created the famous "Harry and Louise" ads that helped kill President Clinton's health care bill in 1993.
